Teeth Whitening Q&A

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening uses FDA-approved solutions to reduce the appearance of tooth stains and tooth discoloration.

There are many types of teeth whitening treatment, but most use hydrogen peroxide as their main ingredient. When applied to your teeth, hydrogen peroxide oxidizes the molecules deep within your enamel. Over time, that oxidation process eliminates stains, making your teeth appear brighter.

What causes teeth to lose their luster?

Most people experience tooth discoloration because of the aging process. Years of biting and chewing cause your enamel to wear down, revealing more of the yellow dentin beneath.

Other factors that contribute to stained or dingy looking teeth include:

  • Tobacco use
  • Drinking beverages like black tea or coffee
  • Eating foods like tomatoes or berries
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Taking medication with tetracycline

You might also experience discolored teeth if you don’t visit the dentist regularly. The team at Sauer Dentistry recommends scheduling a check-up every six months.

What are the types of teeth whitening?

At Sauer Dentistry, the team offers several types of teeth whitening, including:

In-office whitening with Philips Zoom!

Philips Zoom! uses hydrogen peroxide and a special blue light to make your smile up to eight* shades lighter in a single treatment session. Your Sauer Dentistry provider applies the whitening gel to your teeth and lets it sit. Then, they point a blue light at them, causing a whitening reaction.

Take-home whitening kits by Opalescence®

Opalescence take-home whitening kits contain a bottle of hydrogen peroxide gel and two custom mouthpieces. You line the mouthpieces with the gel and wear them for several hours a day, whenever works best with your schedule. Your teeth become whiter over a period of several weeks.

Do the results of teeth whitening last forever?

The results of teeth whitening treatment don’t last forever, but you can maintain them for 4-6* months and sometimes longer.

To prevent stains from recurring, the team at Sauer Dentistry recommends brushing your teeth twice daily, drinking dark beverages through a straw, and visiting the dentist once every six months for professional teeth cleaning.
